did you learn a lot?
I feet that because of this project I did learn a lot and now have a better under standing of world events. I like that not only did our class focus on events of the pass but also current events. With out the project I would not have stayed as up to date on these events as I have now.
what helped you learn what you did?
I like that we got to use the internet as our source. I think that it was a good modern to learn about the world around us.
could you have learned more?
I could have learned more because this project was not one of our biggest ones so we did not spend as much time on it as we did with other projects. If we had spent more that just a couple minutes a week on this project I could have learned some more.
what would you do differently next time?
I would try to to postpone doing the bookmarks every week. I would leave them until the last minute and then I would forget to do them and there was noway to fix this mistake because I had waited to the end of the week to do my bookmarks.
what could Mr. Scott do differently next time?
Next time I would spend more time explaining how to do the wiki post. Even after all this time I am still not quite sure that I exactly know what they are for or how we are supposed to use them. I think more time should be put into explaining how to use a wiki and what we are trying to accomplish on the wiki because it is a part of the current events project that I have always struggled with.
do you think you'll continue to read the news?
Probably not as much because it is something that is no longer required of me. I would like to try to stay updated on most world news though. I do believe that in the end this project has influenced me to try and continue on in staying aware of important news.

I am hearing this news being presented by an outside source because the BBC is a news company in Britan and it is reporting on events that are happening in the middle east.
* How do we know when we know? What's the evidence, and how reliable is it?
I think that this information is pretty reliable. News can never be fully unbiased and with the troubles that our country and other countries are facing with the middle east it is hard to keep all bias' out of the news
* How are things, events, or people connected to each other? What is the cause and what is the effect? How do they fit together?
With lots of fighting and on going tensions between different countries and different groups there seems to be a theme of violence a lot of fighting.

In every region that I have researched countries are not only fighting with themselves but they are fighting within themselves as well. Also in other regions oil has also come up a lot. Because of thee tensions that I have read about in the middle east now it helps build my knowledge of what I learned about countries trying to find alternative places to find oil such as China.

The middle east war is something that has effected our country greatly because we are a war with them. This war has effect everyday life becuase it has effect gas prices.

Middle East Foreign Relations
In recent news in the middle east, Australia is to offer a permanent home for hundreds of Iraqi employees because later on this year Canberra, the capital of the commonwealth of Australia, will pull its combat forces out of the Gulf. Immigration officials have been brought in to help speed up the process of visa applications. Israel holds Hamas, a Palestinian militant and political party, responsible for the deaths two Israeli citizens and seven Palestinians in a raid in Israel. The suspicion of Hamas was rooted in the fact that the raid took place near a Gaza crossing which has been under Hamas control since last June. The raid began as an attempt to seize Israeli soldiers and escalated into gun fire. Israel has stated that they will respond to this attack in their own time. Talks between China, the US, the UK, and France met with a German negotiator to talk about Iran's nuclear goals. The talks evolved ways to keep Iran's nuclear program a peaceful one. These talks though have turn out to not be fruitful as no agreement seemed to be reached and many problems still remain. Iran has been expanding its work in the nuclear field despite concerns from the security council that Iran will soon posses uranium that can be used for weapons. Iran has countered that they wish to only further civilian nuclear energy. In not necessarily surprising news, polls conducted by the university of Maryland and Zogby international and surveys by the BBC have reached the conclusion the eight out of 10 Arabs hold strong dislike for the American government. Recently the positive perspective of other counties on the united states has grown some 4 percent but have continued to stay negative in Arab countries. After this poll though another one was produced that delivered more promising results. A poll by the ABC/BBC showed that in Iraq there has been a 20 percent increase in positive views on the security accomplishments of the American government in Iraq. Pakistan has reached a lucrative deal with Iran to clear the way for the building of 7.2 billion dollar pipeline straight through to India. This 1,620 mile long pipe will most likely earn millions of dollars for Pakistan because of transit fees. This deal will not only have positive effects on the economy but promote peace between the two countries as well as the benefits that will be given to India and its ever growing economy. This pipeline was not great news for the united states which feels that this pipeline will only weaken the united states plan to cut off the city of Tehran in Iran. The death toll continues to rise as tension and retaliation continue between Israel and Palestine around the Gaza strip. Despites this rising tension Leaders on both sides insist that progress can be made and that talks are moving in a positive direction.

Letter from a Soldier in Vietnam
1. In the letter, Lieutenant Kempner describes a plant. What does the plant look like?
On his patrol through the jungle Kempter saw a flower that was soft and red and had no thorns on it.
2. What does this plant represent to Kempner?
Kempner explains that the flower represents Vietnam because Vietnam is a country filled with plants with thorns that cut as well as guns and death but even in the middle of that there is still one beautiful flower, just like there is still some beautiful thoughts of hope for peace even if the flower might one day die.
3. Based on your reading of this letter, what qualities or traits do you think might have helped Kempner cope with the trials of war in Vietnam?
From my reading it seems Kempner has the trait of finding hope and beauty even in horrible and hopeless times. This trait is one that would help sustain him in his time in Vietnam where everything was so dark, dangerous, and seemingly hopeless.

Dean Rusk- The Secretary of State who worked closely with the president to help reach the conclusion to start sending troops to Vietnam.
William Westmoreland- A American commander in South Vietnam who requested more American troops because he was greatly unimpressed with the fighting ability of the South Vietnamese Army.
U.S. Congress- Granted President Johnson war powers such as the desicion to send troops off to Vietnam

U.S. Military Strategies result in a bloody stalemate.

They had many useful advantages such as effective hit and run tactics, a better knowledge of the land and the juggle, and they had the advantage of secrecy because they cold disguise themselves as civilians and attack troops. They also had several underground tunnels that not only protected against air attacks but connected towns.

They used the strategies such as setting up land mines everywhere to explode in the jungle, and strategy of trying to prevent the Vietcong from gaining the support of the south and rural populations. Ironically these strategies usually ended up backfiring and hurting the U.S. troops.

Foreign Relations South Asia
In recent news Japan's Prime minister decided to use its rarely invoked override power to go around a previous law that had stopped Japanese war ships from helping fuel American ones in the Indian Ocean. These American warships are ones that are stationed near Afghanistan and the Prime Minister hopes to gain favor by showing some support for the war on terror. Though the prime minister hopes this will improve Japans international image, there has been much opposition with others stating that this decision to override the registration "lacks a UN mandate and violates the country's pacifist constitution". India's economy and trade market has been facing some great turmoil recently due directly to problems in the US trade market, which is a huge market for Indian exports and outsourcing contracts. Though there was a step fall of 5 percent and then another 7 percent, there has been some recent recovery. This also was a direct effect of the us trade market where the US federal reserve has decide to make biggest cuts to interest rates that they have seen in 25 years. Though this cut has given hope for some positive growth in Indian and general Asian and Europe markets, analyst are still strongly recommending people to watch the market with caution regarding the market for the next upcoming months. In more upcoming news many predict that countries, especially ones in Asia, that have in recent years become extremely active and powerful in the markets to face problems that have been plaguing the US to spread over to them. Trouble in the US could now decently mean a slower growth in Asia which has been sharing a strong and benifical trade with the US market. Sri LanKan has been facing recent tragedy in respect to its upcoming celebrations. Sri Lanka was in a state of celebrating its 60th anniversary of independence from Britain when a least 50 people died in a bus bombing. This bombing is suspected to most likely to have been set of by The Tigers. The Tigers are fighting rebels that have been fighting to make north and east Sri Lanka a independent state. Though these rebels originated in 1983, there has been an intense surge in the civil war in Sri Lanka recently as there has been much tension between the government and the rebles as well as other deadly bus attacks. An illegal organ trading "mastermind" from India has just be arrested in Nepal. Amit Kumar was found in a hotel in southern Nepal. India has asked Nepal to hand over the culprit so that he can face questioning on how he bribed hundreds of poor labors into illegally selling there kidneys and then reselling them to the wealthy in desperate need of a transplant. This sort of human organ trade is illegal and banned in India.
